Petrol Cars for Long-Distance Flexibility
If your trip involves long drives, such as a cross-country journey from Barcelona to Seville or a tour of the Scottish Highlands, a petrol car is often the better option. Petrol and diesel cars remain the most common rentals, and their biggest advantage is flexibility.
Fuel stations are easy to find, and refueling takes only a few minutes. In contrast, EV charging stations may be harder to locate in rural areas, and even with a fast charger you will spend time waiting. Petrol cars are also more familiar for many drivers, which means less of a learning curve.
Take the example of a family holiday across Ireland. You might drive hundreds of miles through countryside where charging stations are rare. A reliable petrol hatchback or estate car removes that worry and lets you focus on the trip.
Petrol rentals are often cheaper upfront compared to EVs. While you will spend more on fuel, many travelers prefer the convenience, especially if they are on a tight schedule.

Choosing Based on Your Trip
So which is right for you? The answer depends on your travel style and destination.
If you are visiting Norway or the Netherlands, an EV is the obvious choice. Both countries have excellent charging infrastructure and strong incentives for electric driving. If you are planning to explore rural Spain, Ireland, or Eastern Europe, a petrol car will give you more peace of mind because charging options may be limited.
For travelers who want a mix of both, many rental companies now offer hybrid cars. These combine electric efficiency for shorter drives with the reliability of petrol for longer trips.
The most important factor is to match your car to your itinerary. Think about how many miles you will cover each day, where you will refuel or recharge, and whether sustainability or speed of travel is a priority.
