If you have a rental car and a few days, here’s how to make the most of Faro, Lisbon, and the road that links them. Faro & the Algarve: Nature, History, Relaxation starts in Faro, the charming capital of the Algarve. The old town (Cidade Velha) has narrow winding streets, faded pastel walls, the Faro Cathedral (Sé de Faro) whose bell tower offers sweeping views over the red rooftops, the lagoon, and the sea. Don’t miss the Museu Municipal de Faro, housed in a former convent. Roman mosaics, Moorish artefacts, religious art are great places to learn about Algarve’s layers of history. Also, pop into Igreja do Carmo and the Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones). Walls lined with skulls might sound spooky but in its own way deeply atmospheric. For nature lovers, the Ria Formosa Natural Park is magic. Lagoons, barrier islands, flamingos, quiet inlets and mangroves. Take a ferry to one of the islands like Ilha do Farol or Ilha da Culatra for beach escape and calm. If you want hiking or scenery, drive out toward Monchique or explore Olhão, a fishing town with seafood, markets, artistic corners. The drive gives you flexibility you can stop in small coastal towns, taste wine, pause at viewpoints, detour to hidden beaches. Then you make your way north to Lisbon and everything feels bigger brighter more alive. Trams rattle up steep hills and bathrooms glow with pastel tiles. You sip strong coffee and bite into custard tarts that feel like Portugal in your mouth. Sunset light catches the towers of Belém and sky lights up over the Tagus river. Music rings out from tiny tavernas in Alfama and you lose track of how long you have been walking because everything you see feels like it matters. Along the way you learn the road rules the hill climbs the view breaks parking tricks and toll roads. That becoming part of the trip makes every turn rewarding. Portugal reveals itself slowly through clever detours ancient ruins quiet beaches gallery shows and every meal with windows open. When night falls you rest knowing you have already collected memories to last a lifetime.
Driving between Faro and Lisbon (and exploring the surroundings) is part of the fun but doing a bit of planning makes it far more relaxing. First, make sure your rental includes toll coverage or an electronic toll tag (Via Verde is Portugal’s system) so you don’t get caught off guard on highway stretches. Also, fuel up before venturing into rural areas, some stretches have fewer petrol stations, and detours to refuel can eat into your time. In Lisbon itself, parking is a challenge: narrow streets, traffic congestion, and paid zones are common. Be strategic about your drop-off times to avoid rush-hour jams. Finally, always respect speed limits though Portuguese motorways are smooth, coastal and mountain roads demand extra caution.
Just outside Faro in the quiet countryside of Estói lie the Roman Ruins of Milreu, where you can wander through the remains of a once-luxurious villa of the 1st-4th centuries. Marvel at the intricate fish mosaic floors, explore the old baths, courtyards and the temple that stood long ago. Then there’s the pink palatial wonder of Estói Palace with its tiered gardens, fountains and azulejo tiles that blend history and romance in every view. For taste of local life stop by the Mercado Municipal in Faro or the Mercado Municipal de Olhão to enjoy fresh fish, vibrant veggies, sweet pastries and handmade crafts, perfect places to soak up genuine Algarve atmosphere.
