Welcome to North Cyprus: the Turkish part of Cyprus

Beautiful North Cyprus is served by a single large and modern airport, with all international flights arriving via Turkey. The brand new high-tech Ercan International Airport (ECN) was completed in 2023 and is located 13 kilometres (8 miles) east of Lefkosa (Nicosia). It’s the primary international gateway to North Cyprus, apart from ferry arrivals. North Cyprus, separated from the Greek-speaking South of Cyprus by a border checkpoint, is properly known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Turkish is spoken in the northern part of the island of Cyprus and it offers a similar Cypriot Mediterranean charm to the South - with a distinctly Turkish twist. It handles all flights arriving from the Europe, the Middle East, Australia and Africa via Turkey and provides easy access to the capital city, Lefkosa (Nicosia), and as well as the Girne (Kyrenia), Gazi Magusa (Famagusta), Iskele and all other destinations in the North of Cyprus. There are no direct flights from countries other than Turkey due to the political situation. Several airlines operate flights from the UK to Northern Cyprus via Turkey, including Turkish Airlines from London Heathrow Airport (LHR), London Gatwick (LGW), Manchester Airport (MAN, Birmingham Airport (BHX), and Edinburgh Airport (EDI). Pegasus Airlines from London Stansted Airport (STN) and Manchester Airport (MAN) and A-jet from London Luton Airport (LTN).

The coastline landscape in North Cyprus is quite different to that in the south. The beaches are more plentiful and smaller, and the shoreline still largely undeveloped outside of key resort towns. However, much like the South of Cyprus it is blessed with quaint villages, markets and rich history. The capital of North and South Cyprus is divided between the two, with the Greek Cypriot-speaking South (Republic of Cyprus) and the Turkish Cypriot north (TRNC) calling it Nicosia and Lefkosa respectively. Lefkosa has an ancient historical heart and is famously home to the Selimiye Mosque and some fine old walls, ancient moat, lively markets and quaint street cafés. Girne (Kyrenia) is a busy coastal city known for its picturesque harbour, medieval castle, and lively nightlife. It has long been the biggest tourist draw with its Ancient Harbour dotted with traditional fishing boats and old Kyrenia Castle overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Yet, it is arguably the surrounding rugged mountains and sleepy beachside villages that make Girne such an appealing holiday destination. Be sure to enjoy a stroll around the village of Bellapais, on the outskirts of Girne’s city limits, and home to the famous Bellapais Abbey, a 13th-century Gothic monastery, and is where writer Lawrence Durrell Gerald Durrell, the renowned British naturalist, author, and conservationist, spent time in Bellapais, a picturesque village in Northern Cyprus, during the 1950s. Bellapais, with its stunning views, historic abbey, and serene atmosphere, served as an inspiration for parts of his work and life.

Durrell was deeply drawn to Bellapais for its natural beauty and tranquility. Nestled in the foothills of the Kyrenia mountain range, the village overlooks the Mediterranean and boasts an idyllic charm, which resonated with Durrell's love for nature. He lived there while writing Bitter Lemons of Cyprus and Lawrence's depiction of Bellapais in his book often references the area's unique flora and fauna. The Gothic-style abbey, built by Augustinian monks in the 13th century, is one of Bellapais's most iconic landmarks. Lawrence Durrell’s brother Gerald, known for his passion for wildlife and conservation, found the abbey's surroundings—a mix of gardens, orchards, and wild landscapes—a place of contemplation and study. The village is rich in biodiversity, with olive trees, citrus groves, and native wildlife. Gerald Durrell, who dedicated his life to preserving endangered species, would have appreciated the ecological richness of the area. Today it’s a place of charm with narrow streets, traditional houses, and breathtaking views of the Kyrenia coastline. The Bellapais Abbey hosts events like winter concerts and summer festivals, maintaining its cultural significance. Another sight worth seeing is the mountaintop castle of Saint Hilarion, to the west of Girne (Kyrenia) said to have inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Known for its ancient ruins, Gazimağusa (Famagusta) offers a fascinating look at Cyprus’s rich history. The city is home to the medieval Othello Castle, the Church of Saint George. Located in the beautiful heart of historic Famagusta, Othello Castle is steeped in history and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. The castle’s connection to Shakespeare’s "Othello" makes it an intriguing stop for history buffs. Also the ancient ruins and sacred site of Solomon’s Temple, site that provides an insight into the island’s long history of religious significance. Visitors can explore the ruins and imagine life during the ancient Greek and Roman periods. Another sight not to be missed is Maraş (Varosha), the ‘ghost town’ in Famagusta, which has opened up after 50 years and offers a haunting glimpse into the past. It remains abandoned and largely untouched since the 1974 partition of the island.

A quieter town compared to Nicosia and Kyrenia, Güzelyurt is famous for its agricultural products, including orange groves and citrus fruits. The town offers a more relaxed atmosphere and is ideal for visitors seeking a less touristy experience. Güzelyurt offers a more authentic and less commercialised experience of Northern Cyprus. With its combination of history, scenic beauty, and laid-back vibe, it's an excellent destination for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and those looking to escape the crowds.Nearby attractions include the Agios Mamas Monastery and the ancient ruins of Soli. Known for its fertile, lush green surroundings, Lefke is a peaceful town that offers a slower pace of life. It’s an excellent destination for hiking and nature lovers. The town is also close to the ancient ruins of the city of Marion.

*Hassle-Free Desk: The dreaded moment when the rental company hits you with upsells, extra inspections, or credit card dramas—turning what should be a quick pick-up into a drawn-out negotiation.

Third-Party Protection: What you need to know
Some companies might call it 'Full Protection' or 'Premium Protection', but we're here to tell you the facts.
Third-party protection does cover you fully against damage costs, just like our best product. However, the rental desk experience? That's still going to be the same as if you'd picked the basic option.
What is Third-Party Protection? It's an independent coverage that protects you from damage costs the rental company could charge. It works well but doesn't change how things go down at the rental desk.If you're interested in third-party protection, Rental Cover is our preferred partner. You can learn more or purchase coverage directly by visiting their website.
What is expected at the Rental Desk:Even with third-party protection, you'll still face the usual desk drama—deposits, credit card holds, and those upsell attempts. While you're financially protected, the hassle at the desk doesn't go away.We believe in keeping things clear: while third-party protection covers you well, the customer experience remains basic.
The Role of the Car Rental Company:Rental companies insure their cars, and they need you to either buy their protection or leave a deposit. Third-party protection takes care of the financial risks, but the rental company still holds the cards at pick-up.Want to avoid the hassle entirely? Read more about our Best Protection, which keeps both your wallet and your rental process smooth.
