Malta: Dive In & Drift Along

Malta Uncharted
Malta isn’t just sun-baked history and crystal blue Mediterranean water (though it’s absolutely those things). It’s a diver’s playground and a driver’s dream rolled into one. Imagine finishing breakfast, slipping into your wetsuit, and before most tourists have even checked in, you’re already exploring a wreck or a reef. Then, after the dive, you slide into your rental, windows down, salty hair intact, and head toward rugged cliffs or rolling countryside roads that sparkle in the afternoon sun.
Dive Spots to Drop Into
Malta has some memorable dive sites that cater to beginners and advanced divers alike. Ċirkewwa is famous for its mix of walls, caves, tunnels, and wrecks like the MV Rozi tugboat and the P29 patrol boat. The Christ of the Sailors statue off Qawra is surreal for those who love underwater art and marine life. Gozo’s Blue Hole, Reqqa Point, and other reefs give you variety as well, you can dive shallow one moment, explore dramatic drop-offs the next.
Roads, Routes, & Rental Perks
Having your own rental car in Malta changes the game. Roads between dive centres, bays, temples, and coastal villages become invitations. One of the prettiest routes is from Żurrieq to Mellieħa along the west coast. Your drive takes you by the Blue Grotto, the ancient temples at Mnajdra and Hagar Qim, scenic scrubland, seaside views and old chapel gems. Pick your car smart and make sure it's something easy to maneuver through narrow village lanes and comfortable enough for longer coastal drives. Fuel up before you go, watch out for local traffic quirks, and use a stable navigation app. These roads are rideable, beautiful, and much more fun when you decide your stops.

What You Need to Know Before You Go
Driving in Malta is a bit of a thrill. You’ll be driving on the left. Some roads are narrow and winding; in some towns parking is tight and finding space near dive sites can be a challenge. Also high season (summer) means busy dive centres and crowded parking, so book your rental ahead, especially if you want specific vehicles. Dive shops often assist with logistics if you tell them you have your own car they’ll help with directions, best times to dive given tides and visibility, and sometimes where to safely leave your gear. Don’t forget basic dive safety, proper certification, checks on reef or wreck restrictions, and always dive with reputable local guides. Malta takes its dive sites seriously, with active efforts to promote sustainability and protect marine life.
Malta really comes alive during its festival season, so timing your visit right can add a whole new layer of fun to your trip. From June through September the Malta International Arts Festival, Malta Jazz Festival, and countless local village festas light up towns with music, food, lights, and colour. Also shoulder months like May or October often give you great weather from warm seas, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed pace for driving and diving.
Safe travels and here’s to miles of memories, not miles of waiting! Remember it’s Your Journey Your Choice.
