What You Need to Know Before You Go

Driving in Malta is a bit of a thrill. You’ll be driving on the left. Some roads are narrow and winding; in some towns parking is tight and finding space near dive sites can be a challenge. Also high season (summer) means busy dive centres and crowded parking, so book your rental ahead, especially if you want specific vehicles. Dive shops often assist with logistics if you tell them you have your own car they’ll help with directions, best times to dive given tides and visibility, and sometimes where to safely leave your gear. Don’t forget basic dive safety, proper certification, checks on reef or wreck restrictions, and always dive with reputable local guides. Malta takes its dive sites seriously, with active efforts to promote sustainability and protect marine life.

Malta really comes alive during its festival season, so timing your visit right can add a whole new layer of fun to your trip. From June through September the Malta International Arts Festival, Malta Jazz Festival, and countless local village festas light up towns with music, food, lights, and colour. Also shoulder months like May or October often give you great weather from warm seas, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed pace for driving and diving.
