Driving around the Isle of Skye is an unforgettable experience, offering some of the most spectacular landscapes in the UK. The drive from the airport to Portree is an excellent introduction to the island, taking you through 5 kilometres (3 miles) of some of the island’s most beautiful vistas. As you approach Portree, you’ll be welcomed by views of the harbour and the surrounding hills, making this vibrant village a perfect base for your time on Skye.

Once you leave the town, the roads become quieter, and the scenery becomes even more dramatic. Skye is well known for its remote beauty, and driving here can be an adventure in itself. The dramatic landscape is staggering and as you cruise along the winding roads, the towering peaks of the Cuillin mountains rise majestically in the distance, their jagged outlines set against the ever-changing skies. The rugged coastline unfurls before you, revealing steep cliffs, hidden coves, and the striking blues and greens of the sea. 

Skye’s wildlife is equally captivating. Keep your eyes peeled for the majestic golden eagles soaring above the cliffs, their wings spread wide as they scan the land below. You might spot the elusive red deer grazing peacefully in the heather-clad moors, or a curious otter darting along the shoreline. The shores are also home to a variety of seabirds, from graceful puffins nesting on the rocky outcrops to majestic sea eagles perched high on the crags. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a pod of dolphins or seals playing in the waves. The island’s landscapes, from its lush glens to the stark beauty of the Trotternish Ridge, offer an ever-changing tapestry of nature, where each bend in the road presents a new and awe-inspiring view. The road network on the island is relatively simple, but many of the routes can be narrow and winding, especially on the west side of the island and in more rural areas. You’ll see breathtaking ancient volcanic formations and steep cliffs offering panoramic views on the road to Quiraing. Take the A87 and then the B885 and head towards Staffin for a road that winds through spectacular landscapes, with several viewpoints along the way, providing unbeatable spots for photos. Another essential drive is to the Fairy Pools, located near Glenbrittle on the southwestern coast of Skye.
