Driving Malaga

Driving in and around Malaga is straightforward, thanks to its well-maintained roads and efficient signage. The A7 coastal highway connects the city to nearby attractions, while the AP-7 toll road offers a faster, less congested route for longer journeys. Once in Malaga’s city centre, you’ll find parking facilities near key attractions, but some areas, especially the old town, are pedestrianised. Renting a car allows you to explore the region at your own pace, whether it’s driving to the Alhambra in Granada or enjoying a scenic coastal drive to Nerja. Outside of the city, the Costa del Sol is equally captivating and a drive to Marbella’s old town is highly recommended. Known for its cobblestone streets and charming bloom-filled historic plazas, Marbella has plenty of charming restaurants in the older part of the city. Nerja, with its famous caves and breathtaking Balcon de Europa viewpoint, is a must-visit. For something more tranquil, head to the Montes de Málaga Natural Park, a haven for wildlife and hiking. Whoever you drive, remember that the Costa del Sol is teeming with life, from its coastal habitats to its mountainous terrains. The azure waters are home to dolphins, while the skies above are frequented by kestrels, peregrine falcons, and seagulls. Inland, the Sierra de las Nieves boasts ibexes and boars in its rugged landscape. The region’s flora is equally diverse. Olive trees dominate the countryside, their silvery leaves shimmering in the sunlight. Orange groves add bursts of colour, especially in spring, while bougainvillea and hibiscus create vibrant displays in gardens and along streets. A variety of aromatic herbs, such as rosemary and thyme, grow wild by the roadside are staples in local cuisine - there’s so much you can see, and smell, en route.
